A year or so ago, CBS announced that they were doing an adaptation of Aardman Animation’s “Creature Comforts”. It looks like the fruits of that collaboration are here. I’m of decidedly mixed feelings about the results, the results of which are shown in a short clip below. (CBS’ website for the show)
Oh my…
They actually did this in England, and it’s a popular series there. It’s several 4-5 minute clips along these lines. The fact that they got some flamboyant voices and stereotyped them isn’t unique either. They did similar in England too. So I don’t think it’s all bad, it’s just not what we’re used to.
Um, I’m well-familiar with the British series; has the DVD’s and I’ve watched a good bit of them. At least those had the benefit of the exoticness of accents – perhaps this is a bit too mundane. That aside, though, I’ve never really thought that the concept holds up well over a half-hour (and CBS has apparently ordered six 30-minute episodes as a mid-season replacement). Once the novelty wears off, it’s just…people talking about their lives. Which, sadly, can get a bit boring after a while.
It really depends on what they do with it. I actually found it really interesting, because it’s someone else’s perspective on life. 30 minutes is a bit excessive, sure. But who knows? They got lucky on “survivor”, and it’s basically 60 minutes of office politics on an island.
It seems extremely similar, we’ve got some creature comfort dvds too. I think some of the reoccuring characters from the other show really gave it a lot of it’s charm. I loved the dog + cat couple that would flatter each other.
I think it’s got good potential to.. at least be very similar. I’m not so sure how well it would do overall in ratings here though. To me it’s not something you can watch in with a lot of people.. or for a very long time.. but for something to… *cough* chill out for an hour or so.. well you understand where I’m coming from.
I think I know the cops. 🙂
It feels much the same as the UK series, but this clip wasn’t particularly funny. They seemed to be trying too hard with the visuals – the animals were too frequently doing non-animal stuff. Needs more subtlety. Maybe it can’t be done without dry British humor…?
