Digging through the TiVo

So I fired up the TiVo this morning and noticed something bad – all of the suggestions we had on there were gone. This means that they got deleted to make space – I counted up what we had on there and sure enough, 31.5 hours of a possible 32 hours. What all is on there that’s taking up so much space? Well, let’s see…

The Amazing Race 4 (CBS) – A reality show you can watch without feeling guilty. Highly recommended as they get down to the last few episodes of the trip around the world. As much as I’d like to pull for the gay guys, I’m rooting for the clowns because they have played the best, I think.

Good Eats (Food Network) – I want to have Alton Brown’s child. The show for food geeks.

Family Guy (Cartoon Network) – I can’t believe we missed this the first time around. This show is hysterical, with a lot of really off-the-wall humor.

Gay Weddings (Bravo) – Actually an old series on Bravo that they reran in a marathon a few weeks back. We didn’t think we’d like it but it brings back a lot of memories of what we went through before our commitment ceremony – the good and the bad. We’ve watched 3 of the 8 episodes so far.

Insomniac with Dave Attell (Comedy Central) – Not as funny as it was in its first two seasons, this show still has a few amusing moments. It’s usually background stuff while we muck and chat with folks on the net.

Futurama (Fox/Cartoon Network) – On Season Pass for new episodes, and we’re picking up ones we missed from Cartoon Network’s rerunning of them during Adult Swim.

Cook’s Tour (Food Network) – Tony Bourdain is an asshole, and I love his show! His books show what it’s really like to work in a restaurant, and it’s a good kick in the head after the starry-eyed cooking school shows Food Network has been running.

Into the Fire (Food Network) – This new show has some interesting profiles of how large restaurants work. It’s a bit superficial, and more than a little of a big wet sloppy kiss for the restaurants profiled, but it’s watchable nonetheless.

America’s Test Kitchen (PBS) – The companion show to the wonderful Cooks Illustrated, it’s great to watch even if Chris Kimball is a dork.

MI-5 (A&E) – A British import spy series that’s gotten good reviews. We have a couple of these sitting on the TiVo but we have yet to watch them.

The Restaurant (NBC) – The premise: open a restaurant in Manhattan in five weeks, starting from scratch. This is a fun one to watch and it’s skillfully edited into a good, coherent story by Mark Burnett (of Survivor fame/infamy).

Conquest (History Channel) – Peter Woodward (Galen from B5: Crusade) and his crew have to learn to master a different form of weaponry each week. Informative and entertaining, and Woodward is a cutie, too!

Monster House (Discovery) – Like Monster Garage, only watchable. Each week they take a house and redo it on a theme the owners choose (tropical, zen, medieval castle). This is a fun one to watch.

So Graham Norton (BBC America) – Oh my gods, if this guy flamed any more he’d burn the place down! Queer Irish talk show host does a decidedly unique spin on the genre.

The Fairly OddParents (Nickelodeon) – Primarily for takaza, but I enjoy it at times. Good humor for adults thrown in frequently (see also: Courage the Cowardly Dog)

Tyler’s Ultimate (Food Network) – Tyler Florence isn’t nearly as interesting as Alton Brown, but at least he’s not Bobby Flay. Good recipes occasionally.

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (Bravo) – It’s everything you’ve heard and more. Screw stereotypes, just sit back and enjoy the catty comments (Carson, critiquing a pair of underwear: “Uh oh! There’s been an accident – I see skid marks!”) Very funny show.

Dilbert (Comedy Central) – Reruns of the short-lived animated series. Not as funny as the strips, IMHO, but still mildly amusing.

South Park (Comedy Central) – Mostly just me catching up on reruns.

Play (Newsworld International) – Ever wonder what Jian Ghomeshi is up to with Moxy Fruvous on hiatus? He’s hosting this weekly culture show on CBC/NWI. Good show, amusing banter – we don’t always get a chance to watch the episodes we record, but they’re good background.

Dead Like Me (Showtime) – Witty series with a novel premise: You die, but some aren’t dead. Instead, they become “reapers,” normal looking people whose job it is to extract people’s souls from their body right before they die. What can I say? I have a soft spot for Mandy Patinkin.

The Family (ABC) – A reality show to feel guilty about. Um, the less said the better.

Then there’s the stuff that’s in the wings until the fall: Scrubs, ER, The West Wing, Enterprise, The Simpsons, Survivor, Dinner for Five. All good stuff, just no new episodes coming out right now.

And that’s it! Now it’s time to actually watch some of this stuff…
