Midwest Furfest 2002 Demographics Data

For all you concom geeks, here is the demographic breakdown for the attendees of Midwest Furfest 2002. This is a more complete form of the summary that was posted to the MFF-Staff mailing list. These results will also be sent in for addition to the Anthropomorphic Fandom Convention Information Sheet.

First, the overall numbers:
(Some of the data from 2000 is lacking or incomplete)

                                            2000 2001 2002
Total attendees (staff excluded) 446 482 639
Staff* 27 29 46
Total attendees (staff included) 473 511 685
Percent increase in attendance --- 8.1% 32.5%
Preregistered attendees (sponsors included) n/a 212 344
Preregistered sponsors n/a 51 69
At-the-Door sponsors n/a 34 26
Staff sponsors n/a 11 13
Total sponsors 37 85 108

(* - the increasing number of staff is due to a larger number of rollovers
from previous years and a more accurate count of staff)

The number of preregistrations for 2002 increased dramatically due to the implementation of online registration. We intend to use the same system for 2003 (in fact, it’s already operational!). The increase in sponsors is very reassuring – you like us, you really like us! With the sponsorship rate increasing from $85 to $100 for 2003, it will be interesting to see how this affects the overall number sponsorships purchased.

Next, a breakdown on a regional basis:

                2000 2001 2002
Midwest 65.9% 69.8% 66.0% (IL, WI, IN, MI, MN, OH, MO, IA)
Northeast 5.8% 7.5% 4.53% (NH, MA, NY, CT, RI)
Mid-Atlantic 4.7% 4.6% 5.0% (PA, MD, VA, WV)
Southeast 5.6% 7.7% 7.7% (NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, TN, KY)

West Coast 7.4% 2.9% 4.2% (CA, OR, WA)
East Coast 14.6% 16.4% 13.7% (NH, MA, NY, CT, PA, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL)

Hard to really detect any kind of trend here, except to say that all the new attendees aren’t really coming from any one region in particular, there’s just more of them coming from the same places as before.

…but I’m a bear! Why do I have to wear the pink tutu?
A species declaration, while a headache to get accurately, would be a fun (if worthless) stat.

I hope that was supposed to be “ND”, otherwise I’ll have to change my maps.
*snug* Thanks for the stats though, Dean Duncan.
