So, for those of you who weren’t able to make it to the Housewarming Party, here is a photo tour of our new home. Enjoy!
(I apologize for the varying qualities of lighting in these pictures – I’m afraid I haven’t had time to fully tweak all of the pictures).

Here are the floor plans for the place. This is a townhouse, an end unit.
We’ll start in the living room. Originally, all of the walls were plain white (matching the white ceiling, actually); we had the downstairs and the three bedrooms repainted before moving in and we’re extremely happy with the results. Also, I’m a little distressed at how small our formerly nice big TV is in the huge space we have. We’ll need to do something about that sooner than later.
The kitchen and breakfast area. The tall cabinet on the right is for the storage of vital beverages. The kitchen is a bit small for our needs, but it’s worked surprisingly well, especially since there’s a lot of counter space.
The dining room and foyer, viewed from the living room. Man, the chandelier has got to go, as do the two light fixtures. Eventually, anyway…
Dining room, foyer, and parlor bath. The door next to the stairs goes to the surprisingly large storage closet we like to call the “Harry Potter Room”. It extends back under the stairs and wraps around in a U-shape under the lower flight of stairs as well. We’ve installed shelves in it and made it a secondary pantry for small kitchen appliances and dishware.

Kitchen and breakfast area, viewed from the living room. The pantry is quite a bit smaller than I’m used to, which makes me a bit crazy at times.

The stairs and Harry Potter Room. The door between the HP Room and the parlor bath goes to the small mechanical room, which connects to the two-car garage.

The view down the stairs. Imagine carrying a washer and dryer up (and down) those stairs. This is why fordshepherd and tozier_wah deserve medals (possibly Purple Hearts).

The view of the upstairs hallway from Dan’s office. The master bedroom is directly ahead, with the laundry room on the right, and the guest bedroom on the right closest to the camera. Guest bath is on the left.

Guest bedroom. (Those are Ivar bookshelves from Ikea. I bought them in 1988 and they have literally been set up and taken down almost two dozen times. Now that is great furniture!)

Laundry room. I {heart} our front-loading washer and dryer!

The master bedroom. Note the awesome blackout shades on the windows! They are very effective.

Master bathroom. The toilet is set off in a little room for privacy (or claustrophobia. Your choice.).
So there you have it! We have a lot of plans over the next few years (expand the kitchen, install a walk-in shower in the master bathroom, replace the horrible vinyl tile in the foyer and bathrooms), but we’re pretty happy with what we have right now. It’s awesome for entertaining, and comfortable for just the two of us as well. It’s great to have a place to call home!

Looks nice! Yay!
I love that more and more places are putting the laundry room up by the bedrooms. My best friend (who has three kids) insisted on spending extra when they were building their house to get the laundry moved from the basement to the second floor, and she said it’s been a godsend. I’m still stuck carting everything down into the basement. 😛 Oh well, at least it gives me a chance to go down there and check things out once in a while…
Looks good! Once we get some positive cash flow again I’m looking forward to doing some work on our place finally. The roof is done; now we just need new windows, gutters, insulation, siding, wiring, a second garage door opener, get the front sidewalk jacked up, paint a few rooms… (eep!)
A lot of builders want the laundry facilities in the basement because.. well, if it has a serious leakage problem, it’s less likely to cause problems.
That being said, however… I WANTWANTWANT to move laundry up to the second floor near the bedrooms in our place! It’s -such- a pain to haul it down two flights of stairs!
(And Duncan, I still love your place. :D)
Yeah, Dan couldn’t understand why I always considered having the laundry room on a different floor as the bedrooms. As an engineer, the entire concept of separate floors offends me – you generate the laundry in the bedroom areas, so why not have the laundry there? Gah!
And yeah, there’s always that List of Projects. We’ll be starting in on those real soon now 🙂
Sorry I missed your housewarming party, but congrats! Your new place looks really awesome!
Well, we’ll just have to get y’all up here sometime soon to socialize. Just…maybe after November, how about? 🙂
Looks like an awesome place guys 🙂
Nicely done.
Congrats, it looks nice! I’m glad they have more windows on the end units; the ones in the middle must have a rather dreary dining room.
Hmmm… it’s hard for me to get used to houses that don’t have a basement!
Believe me, if we could possibly have afforded it, we would have preferred to have a basement! That adds about $20,000 – $25,000 onto the selling price, though, so we had to make some sacrifices. Maybe the next house (in a few decades…)
Sucks that we weren’t able to make the party. House looks much better, too!
Looking excellent! 😀
Most excellent accommodations!
Wish I could have helped y’all warm ’em up 🙂
Cheers!
I’m not really sure deserves any sort of medal after what he did the night you moved in. Seems he gave himself his own reward.
I do love IKEA. 🙂
Can I hire you as an interior decorator? =)
looks nice! Hopefully I’ll make it out your way soon to see it in person…after November 😉
Looks great! So nicely decorated…I just can’t seem to get my house the way I want it!
you know, most older homes, and the one I grew up in, had a solution to the laundry problem. The laundry chute. Great for throwing clothes down to where the washer and dryer are. (and little brothers too….)
Can you “will” your soon to be “taken care of” tv to someone who “needs”?
