The Only Thing Constant Is Change

Pardon the crappy cellphone pictures.

These are pictures of the new, “improved” lobby of the Hyatt Regency Woodfield in Schaumburg, IL – the former home of Midwest FurFest. As you can see, the koi pond and the comfortable, multilevel seating is completely gone, replaced by an awkward island of chairs and sofas amid a sea of giant…pyramid…things.

Because of the small number of rooms and the lack of sufficient function space, there’s no way we would really ever be able to return the Hyatt, but this is just plain disappointing.

I never attended Anthrocon before it moved to Pittsburgh, but that analogy makes it easier for me to relate to all the folks who tell me they miss the Adam’s Mark.

sad… that was a lovely lobby now it looks terrible. Good thing we left when we did though. What is worse is some person gave the approval of that design and paid alot of money create it. Progress is not always good sadly.

This … I couldn’t imagine its being THAT bad until I saw your pictures. It’s an incredible shame what this new management has done in such a short time.

I actually stared at these photos for a few minutes with my mouth open, trying to picture the old lobby on top of that… place.

What’s with all the obelisks? Are they trying to attract alien ships with their new landing pad?

Sooo lets’s see, we ditched the koi ponds and multi level seating, for- Christmas trees and giant alien altarpieces. Something tells me whatever they did in the design process for the new lobby, part of the contract read ‘absolutely NOT furry friendly’. Well, at least now they have a nice accent for the boob lights in the ballroom.

    way to go Hyatt-

Sad really. That hotel has had such a rich fannish tradition for more years than I care to count. Designers rarely take real life use into mind these days.

Suddenly I’m wanting to cue up “Wizards in Winter.”

It looks like a cross between a dalek and one of those christmas-tree shaped light decorations.

They totally ruiend it. I can’t believe how lame their remodel looks. I hope all of the Koi at least went to a good home; had I known they were doing this I totally would have looked in to purchasing one. The expense of a tank sizeable enough would have been worth the memories. At this point I’m glad MFF isn’t there anymore. They’ve ruined the magic of that hotel.

That’s lame. The Pyramid Power lamps have their own goofy kitschy charm, in that it looks like a set of a 1980s music video, but getting rid of the koi pond is just sad.

I’ll freely admit that I haven’t been particularly impressed with the Westin, especially after having stayed there for Capricon, but seeing those pictures I really couldn’t advocate going back to the Hyatt now. They’ve really destroyed the look (and I can well imagine the feel) of the lobby.

      two questions:

first has someone showed this to uncle Kage yet? Suddenly tearing down the Adam’s Mark compared to a remodel like this doesn’t seem like all that bad an idea. And I thought the multi-colored porn accent lighting they tried our last year was bad.

Second about the Koi. If that remodel is any indication the poor things were likely served in Knuckles some Friday night. Rest in Peace my friends….. or in pieces on a bed of fries. 🙂
