Friday Musing

Not much going on around here this week, so not much to say. I do want to pass along a neat anecdote that I heard on the radio this morning, though:

SiriusPRI channel was carrying a repeat of Wisconsin Public Radio’s To The Best of Our Knowledge about kinos, weekly amateur film festivals that are springing up all over. In this case, they were spotlighting one in Montreal, Quebec, and talking about how amazingly personal and immediate the short films can get.

One filmmaker noticed that he was hearing the song “The Lady in Red” a lot, and it was reminding him of the first time he had ever danced with a girl, when he was 12. He documented in his film what he went through to find out what the girl’s name was, then finding out where she lived, then nervously calling her and reminding her who he was. He asked that if she was interested in meeting him, that she come to a certain location that Friday night – that location being the theater where the kinos were being shown. At that point the filmmaker directed the projectionist to stop the film, and the words appeared ont he screen: Marie-France, ou est vous? (“Marie-France, where are you?”) The 500-member audience took up the cry and chanted her name: “Marie-France! Marie-France!” After a few moments a woman held up her hand. The filmmaker invited her up to the front of the theater and the film resumed, showing two teenagers dancing to “The Lady in Red”. The filmmaker directed the 500 audience members to take their companion for the evening in their arms and dance, while he danced once again with his old friend.

It’s a lovely little story, and one that I really enjoyed listening to. Romantic, hopeful, and just very sweet.

And for the weekend: fun stuff that I’ll write about on later. Yeah, that’s it.

I insist that society is to blame for my immediate reaction, which was, “Oh my gosh, how creepy!” But then I lightened up and loved the story in a healthier spirit.
