There was a husky who updated his LiveJournal frequently. Then he didn’t. Oops.
So anyway, to pick up our narrative where we left off…
First off, the radio gig last Thursday went pretty well. I don’t think I ever had more than six or seven listeners at one time, but that’s cool. I inadvertently made my playlist to freakin’ huge – I started it playing at 7 PM, and when I woke up at 6 AM the next morning it was still going. If called upon to substitute again, I reckon I can just pick up later in the playlist and still play music that almost all the listeners haven’t heard yet.
Friday was a blur of preparations for company – cleaning, shopping, last-minute stuff. Partran (who, for those who didn’t know, is my one-and-only ex-boyfriend and was my best man at our commitment ceremony) and his boyfriend Ron (aka Luagha) were coming to visit for the weekend, and I wanted everything to look decent. Partran was (naturally) late driving in from Tennessee, so I was faced with the problem of picking up someone from the airport when you only vaguely know what they look like. Fortunately, we managed to hook up (the small stuffed tiger he was carrying as an identifier worked well) and got back to the house without a problem. After relaxing a bit we headed out to Crazy Fire, a local Mongolian BBQ joint (mmm, curry…), then crashed early since everyone was a bit tired.
On Saturday we started kind of slow, but hurried up quickly when we got a phone call saying someone wanted to look at the house in an hour. After some frantic last-minute cleaning and showering, we were off for a bit of shopping. We grabbed a quick lunch at The Loop, then went to a local knife shop. Now, Ron and Nathan are a lot more into knives than me or Takaza, but we made up for it by drooling over the kitchenware. We wound up getting a great buy on a 6″ Henkel cleaver for $40, as well as a good knife block so we can stop storing our 10″ chef knife in the silverware drawer (well, it had a blade cover, but still…). We also picked up a very cool little one-piece double boiler – quite handy. Then it was off to a local entertainment center for some DDR, air hockey, and go-kart racing (the slick track was quite the hoot!). A little more shopping followed, then dinner at a Japanese steakhouse. Back home, the food coma set in early and off to bed we went.
On Sunday we headed out to the North Carolina Zoo. Lots of fun there, and lots of pictures to be posted when I get around to it. Watch this space – some very cute otter and arctic fox pictures to come! Dinner was steak au poivre with a brandy cream sauce and over-roasted potatoes. Yummy!
On Monday, Nathan and Ron spent the day back out in Asheboro touring army surplus stores and pawn shops then Nathan dropped Ron off at the airport. I begged off and relaxed around the house for a bit, taking care of unemployment stuff, cleaning up, etc. When Nathan got back we went by Radio Shack in a vain attempt to find cables to connect his Nomad MP3 player to my laptop. To many different kinds of Firewire connections means a greater chance of buying the wrong cable. Oh well. Dinner was roast chicken and then a relaxing evening of The Simpsons and quiet laptop geeking.
I saw Nathan off this morning (after a nice brunch of ham and Swiss omelets) and now we’re back to an empty house. Kind of a nice change, as much as I love having company.
Plans for the coming week? Not much. Possibly going to see “Bowling for Columbine” on Friday night, that’s about it. Need to do laundry today, too. Yay.
On the horizon: Great Big Sea is playing at Lincoln Theater in Raleigh on March 5, with Carbon Leaf opening. We are SO there.
I gots in charge of scheduling from February 12th to March the 2nd as I’ll be in Germany, so you may be called upon to fill in for a night or two.
So far I have 4 guest DJ’s in rotation, and looking to get on 2 more, so for two and a half weeks, the work load should be a bit balanced.
Double boiler? But that’s an evil one-tasker! 🙂
I am definitely tempted to get a knife block myself (and for that matter a decent knife), but am loathe to give up another parcel of counter space. Ah well, nobody’s lost a finger reaching into my silverware drawer so far…
Anyway, it sounds like you guys had a great time. We’ll have to find a way to drag Nathan and Ron up to Chicago one of these days.
A wonderful weekend.
Dragging myself or Ron up to Chicago won’t be all that difficult. I would love to come up there again, as my last visit was a bit of a one day layover due to Lufansa’s airplane being grounded due to technical difficulties. If you want this full story, just ask. But it also turns out that Ron went to college at University of Chicago with none other than the infamous Kagemushi. So it’s an old stomping ground for him it seems. All this serves to make my desire to get into UIC for Pharmacy school stronger still.
As for being late in from Tennessee? Yeah well, I’m always late. Duncan and all involved understand this fact.
DDR was fun, as I played for my first time, it is something that, if there were a machine nearer, I would be all over it… and then waiting for my knee replacement surgery.
I’ll not wax too romantic, but it was a delightful weekend, both something I needed and probably one of the best times I’ve ever had. Thanks Duncan and Takaza. *hugs!*
