A side bit of road-geekery, too: U.S. Route 10 is overlaid with the S.S. Badger route across Lake Michigan, only one of two US routes that incorporates a ferry route - US Route 9 across Delaware Bay being the other. This amuses me for no good reason :-)

Sounds like you were aboard the S.S. Badger, which still sails between Manitowoc, WI and Ludington, MI. That's a much bigger ship, but moves more slowly - a 4-hour crossing vs. 2.5 hours on the Lake Express (which is a modified catamaran design). The Badger would be a fun trip too, and cheaper, but being an extra hour and a half away from us and less convenient sail times, I don't see that happening anytime soon. Still, it looks like fun!

As a kid, I used to live in Michigan, but we had relatives in Milwaukee (where I was born). We took the ferry regularly between Milwaukee and Ludington (sometimes once a month). Station wagon full of kids and luggage, and often a night crossing with a stateroom. I do remember once taking the trip on the 4th of July and they let us do fireworks on deck. My, how times have changed! :-)

Also remember the interminable drive around the South end of the lake. Seemed like FOREVER, and dad was SO grumpy thru Chicago traffic.

I always wondered if it was worth taking that ferry. Sounds kinda cool, actually.

I'll be headed through Michigan to Detroit this weekend!
