I wonder if there is a business opportunity in this? I mean, low cost car ferry across the lake to avoid Chicago? Hmm 😉

Oh, no offense taken! And unfortunately, you’re a bit low – it’s $85 per person, plus $92 for the car. I thought it was a patently ridiculous idea except that the when the numbers, time, and money worked out, we decided to give it a shot. And hey – the trip becomes part of the adventure, instead of another couple hundred miles of boring farmland 🙂

Unfortunately, the only other option is the S.S. Badger, which goes from Manitowoc, WI to Ludington, MI (both parts are further north). The prices are about the same, the cruise takes 5 hours or so, and the sailing schedule is pretty crappy (12:55 AM departure).

I admit, though, that I do love ferries. During our upcoming trip to Montreal, we’re going to take a ferry across Lake Champlain. Not because it’s necessary or saves any time, but because it’s scenic and a very civilized way to travel!

I was looking into it as I wouldn’t mind doing that myself to get to Milwaukee someday ^_^

Though, $200 just seems a bit steep to me. Are there any economy ferries that take cars across the lake?

It’s a splurge, but we decided that since we’re not paying for hotel rooms (yay Marriott points!), it was worth it to avoid the horrible Friday-summer-Chicago traffic. Timewise, it’s about a wash, really – it’s a 2.5 hour trip. But that’s time I’d rather spend enjoy the trip rather than stressing about traffic!

I guess its not really worth it if I want to go to Milwaukee and avoid Chicago 😛 It’s probably a longer trip too, but that’s not as much of an issue. I know boats go slower 😉
