I think going there while ANY group is visiting isn't all that great an idea, especially with a bunch of coaster enthusiasts.
TTD is worth at least one ride, just to say you've done it. And if it breaks down while you're in line, you get a free exit pass for any other roller coaster.
Millennium Force is awesome, especially at night. Pictures don't do it justice at night.
My favorites, in order.
Wicked Twister - (I could ride this till I puke.)
Millenium Force - (It's worth the wait.)
Top Thrill Dragster - (Not not worth the wait, but worth doing at least once.)
Raptor - (Like Batman but longer, faster and taller.)
Magnum XL-200 (Highly under-rated, rarely a line.)
Mantis - (Very jarring, kinda painful, but longer, faster and taller than Iron wolf, so worth a spin.)
And the other 10 roller coasters are typical thrill rides. I don't care for Mean Streak, it's not big-hip friendly, and gave me a headache. But then again, Roller Coasters are like sex, even when they're bad, they're still kinda good.

I've heard that staying in the park is definitely the way to go. I'm not sure if we'll make it there this year or not, but if we do that's where I'd want to stay. I'm tempted by Coastermania, but it sounds like the ERT (exclusive ride time) isn't all that great.
And I'm not surprised about the problems you saw with Top Thrill Dragster. Apparently when ACE had their convention at Cedar Point last summer, TTD was down all three days. For my part, while it looks interesting, I'm not sure I'd kill myself to get on it. I like my roller coaster excitement to last more than 15 seconds, I guess. Not that Millennium Force is all that long of a trip either, but that's the one I have my sights set on :-)

Some friends and I rented a Town Car and drove to Cedar Point last summer. We stayed in one of their "cabins" on the lake, which was awesome. And staying on property means you can get in earlier. Combine that with being at the rear of the park, and we were able to get on Top Thrill Dragster with a minimal amount of wait. Had we jogged, (yeah, right) we probably wouldn't have waited.
The ride itself is awesome. However, at least the three days we were there, it broke down continually. Depending on how heavy the riders are, it doesn't always make it over the top, (a design flaw which they've deemed a "feature," 'cause you get another try.) And several times we saw cars get stuck at the top.
