In reply to brophey. Well, it didn't actually melt, just degraded the rubber somewhat. I believe it was heat-resistant, but the sugar syrup was > 270 degrees F. Silly me, I should have realized this (gee, dealing with high-temperature fluids with the proper equipment is only my job, when I have one...)

In reply to shockwave77598. Nothing as interesting as you'd guess, actually. The moral of the story is, if you're going to make sugar syrup, DO NOT scrape it out of the pan while still hot with a rubber spatula. It didn't melt into the syrup, thank heavens, but that was the first mistake that has caused the spatula to degrade with every run through the dishwasher.
